The group of boys had been playing for well over an hour.

"What are you playing?" I asked. "World War III" they shouted, "Russia versus Ukraine".

This one portrait reflects a wider narrative in society. Boys will make guns, from sticks, lego, any suitable material really.

Children also absorb events as they happen, creating internal narratives in play in response to external world realities; fictionalising battles from factual, on-going concerns. This portrait was taken in March 2014, about 2 weeks into the Crimean Crisis.
